Upper Huia Dam Track
Huia Regional Park

35km from Auckland CBD
3.5 Hours to the dam and back
Dogs: No

This track is not for the faint hearted. Littered with tree roots, rocks and immersed in mud, it is a hard slog but ultimately worth it for the dry banks of the reservoir and the incredible views from the dam itself.

Starting from the car park on Piha Rd, The track begins narrow, muddy and sheltered by beautiful native forest. This theme continues while crossing over a few streams and getting very narrow in parts. Be careful of the tree roots underfoot and watch out for slippery rocks. Those with keen eyes will spot old remnants from when the dam was build in the 20's as well as some natural caves. After 45 minutes you will get views of the Upper Huia reservoir, make your way down and take in the views. From here, the track continues on for another 45 minutes through some very muddy terrain towards the Upper Huia Dam. The Dam is an impressive structure, one of the oldest in the Waitakere ranges, be sure to take a moment to enjoy the view.
