Volunteer and help restore an Island to it's former beauty.
Recently we went on a mission to Motuihe Island to spend the day with the Motuihe Island Restoration Trust. Set-up to restore, enhance and protect the indigenous flora and fauna and the significant historic sites of Motuihe Island, the trust thrives on the help of regular volunteers who ferry to the island every 1st 3rd and 5th Sunday of the month.
Starting out as a maori settlement, converting to a farm, housing WWI prisoners of war and serving as a naval base the island has had a colourful history. All this activity has meant the island has lost most of it's native bush and natural wildlife to farming and the introduction of predators such as rats. The Motuihe Island Restoration Trust has helped rebuild to islands native wildlife population by eliminating rabbits and rats from the island.
